DID YOU KNOW? BENADRYL AND PARKINSON’S

Category:

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a first-generation antihistamine with sedative and anticholinergic properties, primarily used to treat allergies and insomnia. Historically, it has also been utilized in managing certain symptoms of Parkinson's.

Diphenhydramine functions by blocking histamine and acetylcholine receptors in the brain. This action can help alleviate symptoms like tremors and rigidity. Additionally, it may alleviate dystonia (painful muscle contractions), decrease saliva production (which may help reduce drooling), and it could have sedative effects, which may assist in improving sleep quality.

However, the anticholinergic properties of diphenhydramine can lead to cognitive side effects, including confusion, hallucinations, and memory issues, particularly in older adults. Moreover, modern treatments, such as dopaminergic therapies, have proven more effective in managing the core symptoms of Parkinson's.

To ensure it aligns with their treatment plan and overall health considerations, it’s recommended that individuals with Parkinson's consult their healthcare professional before taking Benadryl.
