MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - SEPTEMBER 2026

September always feels like the unofficial end of summer — although here in the desert, where we’re still baking away in triple-digit temperatures, “fall” may be more of a state of mind than an actual weather event.

Still, there’s an unmistakable shift this time of year. Vacations wind down, calendars fill back up, and our community begins returning to its familiar rhythms. At PRO, that means our programs and events are kicking into high gear — and this year, we have more to look forward to than ever.

I’m especially excited that this month we’re launching a new in-person program specifically for LGBTQ+ people impacted by Parkinson’s in Palm Springs. Creating spaces where people feel comfortable, understood, and connected is at the very heart of our mission. Parkinson’s can be isolating enough on its own, and we know that different communities bring different experiences, relationships, and needs to the table. This new program is one more way we’re working to make sure everyone has a place to find support and community.

We’re also ready to have a little fun. On Wednesday, September 30, join us for Wine Down Wednesday at Agua Caliente Casino Cathedral City. Consider it our chance to raise a glass, say goodbye to summer (whether the weather cooperates or not), reconnect with friends, and officially kick off what promises to be a very busy fall and spring season at PRO.

And when I say busy, I mean busy.

We already have a lot cooking: our Holiday Open House, the next Parkinson’s Today: An Educational Symposium, the return of our Shuffleboard Tournament, and PRO on the Move. 

We’re also working on a very special new offering in collaboration with the Parkinson’s Foundation that I’m very excited to tell you about — but you’ll have to wait until next month for that announcement.

And believe it or not, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

I’ve always thought of September as the “beginning” of PRO’s year, much like the start of a new school year. The summer gives us a chance to catch our breath, look closely at what’s working, dream a little bigger, and prepare for everything ahead.

We’ve spent the last few months doing exactly that – and then some. Not only did we welcome new staff and move into a new office space, but we launched a groundbreaking PSA campaign about the early signs of Parkinson’s – things like constipation, active dreaming and loss of smell that are so often overlooked until a tremor appears.

More than anything, we’re excited to spend time with you again — to laugh with you, learn with you, share with you, support you, and grow alongside you. Everything we’re planning ultimately comes back to that simple goal: building a stronger, more connected Parkinson’s community.

Now, with our pencils sharpened and backpacks metaphorically packed, we’re ready. Here’s to a wonderful new “school year.” We can’t wait to get started.
