PRO on the Move was a big success!Category:
Wow – what a weekend! On Saturday, Parkinson’s Resource Organization held our first ever PRO on the Move ‘walk, ride, and roll’ event to bring attention to Parkinson’s Awareness Month and the services we offer people with Parkinson’s and their families.
We started the day at Palm Desert Greens with Team Captain Barbara Kelly and almost fifty walkers. Team ‘PDG Strong’ walked a three-mile course around their community, cheered on by neighbors and accompanied by a bevy of golf carts carrying water, snacks, and the opportunity to rest. Afterwards, participants enjoyed Barbara’s top-secret Bloody Mary mix, got a massage from volunteer masseuse Kristi Zimbelman, and talked with President Jo Rosen about the causes and mysteries of Parkinson’s.
Over at Date Palm Country Club, 30+ golfers were hard at work tackling nine holes in nearly 100 degree heat to support team captain Bobbie Boberski, who’s own journey with Parkinson’s hasn’t slowed her down from hitting the links weekly. She’s even chasing a new handicap! Team ‘DPCC Golfers’ joined PRO staff after their game for refreshments and socializing.
Meanwhile, a dedicated group of professional window shoppers took El Paseo by turquoise storm. Team captain Sandy Richman, a noted fashion icon and caregiver to her husband Jordan, who has Parkinson’s, threw a little retail therapy in the mix to build her team of walkers. The group walked the length of Palm Desert’s famed El Paseo shopping district…and they only stopped in a handful of stores on the way.
Afterwards, they sat down for a well-deserved lunch with President Jo Rosen, who spoke about the importance of taking care of the caretaker and PRO’s caregiver support groups, which exist to do just that.
In addition to our 90+ walkers and golfers, we had a handful of participants ‘on the move’ in their own homes with at-home exercises dedicated to celebrating movement in all its forms. It’s not too late to participate – join us at one of our weekly Movement: Use It or Lose It exercise classes (first & third Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 AM PST). Bring your water bottle, comfortable shoes, and your questions.
We had such a blast on Saturday, and we came SO CLOSE to realizing our fundraising goal of $15,000 for the first ever PRO on the Move walk, ride, and roll. We're just $2,155 dollars short of our goal. Will you help push us over the edge with a donation of $15, $25, or $50 today?
