TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH PARKINSON’S – PLAN AHEAD FOR SUCCESS!

Category:

Traveling with Parkinson's can be manageable with careful planning and preparation. Here are some key strategies to help ensure an enjoyable trip:

Consult your doctor:

Discuss your travel plans with your physician, including potential medication adjustments, necessary vaccinations, and any specific concerns related to your condition.

Medical Documentation:

Bring documentation from your medical professionals that detail your diagnosis and details of over-the-counter and prescription medications you’re taking and any assistive devices that you utilize. Complile and save a list of medications and prescribers in your eMail account, or send them to a trusted person, in case you’re separated from your personal devices. Label assistive devices prior to leaving home.

Medication Management:

Pack sufficient medication for the entire trip, including extra in case of delays. Carry medications in their original containers with prescribers’ names visible, and keep them in your carry-on bag. Be mindful of medication schedules, especially when crossing time zones. Consider using a pill dispenser and setting alarms to ensure timely medication intake.

Travel Insurance and Safety Plan:

Obtain travel insurance that covers any pre-existing conditions and the costs of medication in the destinations you're visiting. Locate an urgent care clinic, pharmacy, and hospital in the area you’re traveling in case of emergency.

Comfort and Accessibility:

Choose comfortable clothing and footwear, consider a backpack or fanny pack to keep your hands free, and request accessible accommodations at your destination. Bring items that can help you stay comfortable, such as a neck pillow, compression socks, and a portable fan.

Airports and Transportation:

Utilize wheelchair services, request assistance with luggage, and take advantage of early boarding. Consider using TSA PreCheck or CLEAR for expedited security screening. Don't hesitate to inform airport or airline staff about your Parkinson's and any specific needs. When possible, choose non-stop flights to minimize the chance for flight disruptions and longer layovers to minimize stress.

Stay Hydrated:

Carry a water bottle and drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, which can help manage constipation and other potential travel-related issues.

Be Prepared for "Off" Times:

Plan for “off” periods – the time frames when medications wear off – and be flexible with your activity itinerary in case additional rest times are needed.

Plan for Downtime and Support:

Build relaxation into your plans to avoid overexertion and manage fatigue. Also, consider bringing a travel partner for companionship and to provide support with daily tasks.

With careful planning and preparation, you can still enjoy traveling and exploring new places with Parkinson's!
