When A Songwriter's Wife Developed Parkinson's, He Wrote This Song

For married couples, Valentine’s Day goes beyond candy-giving and offers a wonderful opportunity to deepen our love and commitment to one another. While there are plenty of gestures that can be made in this regard, sometimes the simplest activities are best: for example, looking through old wedding photos and reaffirming our vows. This is just what singer/songwriter David Seering did, and he’s helping us all set a romantic atmosphere with his 2022 ballad, “The Vow”. 

“The Vow” is a piano driven love song that brings into focus the endurance of wedding vows and the joy that can be found in shared commitment. The song’s touching melody, for which Seering trades in Sinatra-esque jazz for a rich country baritone, is memorable in its simplicity, while the lyrics paint a picture of a faithful religious wedding. The song would make the perfect tune for a first dance.

On his website, Seering explains that the song was born from his desire to bring comfort to his wife of 20 years, Laurie, who has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Through the trials that come with the debilitating condition, David has stood fast at his wife’s side, but one night he was overwhelmed with sorrow. 

Seeking to remember the best of the times they shared together, David went through his wedding photo album and he was brought to tears as the memories came flooding back. He began to contemplate the words of his wedding vows, which would take shape into lyrics for the song:  “For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, till death do us part.”

Seering said he suddenly felt called by God to go to his piano, and before the night was over, “The Vow” had taken form as a lovely song for Laurie. While it is a love letter for his own wife, Seering’s sentiments are bound to resonate in husbands everywhere as it speaks to the heart of the victories and sacrifices of true love. He said:

“The song is about remembering the day we got married… no matter how bad things get in a marriage we still follow the vows that we made to each other. As her primary caregiver, I will never give up under any circumstances.”
